What is mulching
Mulching helps prevent weed growth in pots. Mulching consists of covering the soil with shredded material. The material must be applied to the potted plant, forming a layer of at least 2 cm. After the first watering, it will form a compact but permeable layer, resistant to wind and heavy rain. In addition to hindering weed growth, it slows down water evaporation from pots, maintaining the right level of humidity and temperature, and gives the plant a pleasant aesthetic appearance.
The most commonly used materials for mulching in container cultivation are:
- Miscanthus: a grass plant, therefore a 100% natural mulching material. Once dried and shredded, it is very effective against weed regrowth and provides excellent protection for plants. It is highly wind-stable, has strong water retention capacity, reduces evaporation during hot periods, and naturally decomposes, becoming a source of mineral nutrients. Its light color also enhances the visual appearance of potted plants.
- Lignitec: made exclusively from shredded spruce wood, it has the same properties as Miscanthus but with the advantage of a more uniform particle size and less dust.
- Containermulch: made of debarked and shredded conifer wood. During production, the material is thermally sanitized and colored with natural pigments that give it its typical pinkish tone.
- Rice husk: consists of rice husks from paddy processing, compressed and reduced into pellets. Once placed in the pot and watered, the pellets must be hydrated; they expand to about four times their volume and form a compact layer. Thanks to a natural binder (corn starch), they adhere well to the soil, improving stability and reducing the risk of pots tipping over. Unlike other mulching materials, rice husk pellets are better suited for manual application rather than mechanical filling systems. As an agricultural by-product, it is now a valuable solution for nursery production in controlling weeds in containers.
